Abstract

ABSTRACT The radial parallel plate diffuser has simple structure and is generally suitable for cylindrical water storage devices. In order to improve the storage efficiency, the numerical models of radial diffuser are established by the Fluent software based on an existing small chilled water storage tank. The influence of radial diffuser structure parameters and the height-to-diameter ratio of water storage tank on the thermocline thickness were analyzed. The result shows that when the outlet flow rate is fixed, the ratio of diffuser area to tank cross-sectional area is 33.3%, and the thermal stratification effect is better. Based on the above optimization parameters of the diffuser, a comparative analysis was conducted on the thermocline thickness of the tank in the height-to-diameter ratio range of 1–2.5. The result shows that in the 1–2 range, the volume of the thermocline decreased with the increase in the height-to-diameter ratio. However, when the height-to-diameter ratio was further improved, the diffuser effect was not further optimized. Based on this, the related research of unequal diameter radial diffuser has also been conducted.
