Abstract

Introduction. Thiopental (5-ethyl-5'(1-methylbutyl)-2-thiobar| bituric acid) is known as an ultrashort acting barbiturate to ! induce anesthesia. Thiopental is getting an increasing importance for brain protection in cerebral ischemia and hypoxia [1, 2]. The high serum levels (up to 100pg/ml) necessary for this I I treatment have to be controlled continuously to reduce the 0 1 possible risks for the patients. For this purpose we introduced a fast extraction method with a Sep Pak mini cartridge together with an alternative internal standard (diethylthiobarbituric acid) much more suitable by its shorter retention time. The application of a suitable extraction method with a precolumn combines the particular advantages of different methods reported earlier [3, 4].
