Abstract

In this paper, we study the effect of magnetic field on thermosolutal instability of a compressible Walters’ (model B’) viscoelastic fluid in a porous medium. Darcy model has been used for porous medium. The dispersion relation showing the impact of magnetic field, stable solute gradient and medium permeability has been obtained using the normal mode analysis method. It has been observed that stable solute gradient and magnetic field have stabilizing effect on the system whereas medium permeability destabilizes the system. The effects of stable solute gradient, magnetic field and medium permeability have been shown graphically. The onset of instability has been postponed by the presence of compressibility. The system becomes thermally unstable through oscillatory modes in the presence of above said parameters. In the end, the necessary conditions for the non-existence of overstability have been obtained.
