Abstract
The three body force shell model (TSM) has been applied to evaluate the magnitude of the pressure derivatives of second order elastic constants of alkaline earth oxides and a good agreement with the experimental values has been obtained. It is also pointed out that the calculated values of d C 44 ⧸d p show a smooth variation with ionicities. The theory has been modified by taking into account next nearest neighbour interaction.
