Abstract

1604 Background: The Haifa subdistrict houses the city of Haifa and major industry facilities. The aim of the current study was to assess cancer incidence in the Haifa subdistrict vs. the rest of Israel using valid, personal data. The sample size enabled us to control for socio- demographic variables. Methods: A historical prospective study, with cohort inception and baseline measurement of people participating in the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) 1995 census, was designed. Cancer incidence was calculated in people residing in the Haifa subdistrict vs. a random sample of people residing in the rest of Israel in a 1:1 ratio, after adjusting for age, gender, ethnicity, continent of birth, education years and income per person. In addition, the 1996/7 and 1999 /2000 CBS health surveys, each of 28,000 people, were analyzed to assess smoking prevalence.
