Abstract

The change in the partitioning of assimilates during vegetative growth is studied on the basis of a two-component kinetic model. The two components of the plant are differentiated in relation to their function in the processes of biomass production. It is postulated that the partitioning coefficients of the two components are constant over the entire growth process. According to this assumption, the root to the total dry weight ratio should vary linearly with the specific growth rate. This description agrees with experimental data on growth of Dactylis glomerata L. in controlled environments.
