Abstract
The National Science Foundation, local industries, and school districts in cooperation with the Geological Sciences Department at California State University, Fullerton provided a comprehensive four-year in-service program (Project Catalyst) in earth science for area science teachers. The primary purpose of the program was to enhance teacher competence in earth-science instruction through three years of academic workshops and two content-intensive summer institutes. The first summer institute included class activities and one week of field studies in the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains. The second summer included five weeks of classroom presentations along with visits to local field sites. The third academic year was concluded by a five-day field trip to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and Zion National Park.
