Abstract

A textbook is a learning tool designed for students throughout the learning process. Pictorial material can significantly affect the quality of a textbook and is of great importance in textbooks. The purpose of the study was to examine the quality of pictorial material in textbooks for the subject of environmental studies in the first three grades of primary school and social studies in the fourth and fifth grades of primary school. The pictorial material in the textbooks was analysed according to the set criteria. It was established that the ratio between text and pictorial material in the textbooks was not appropriate in all publishers. The quality of the pictorial material also varied depending on the grade. In all analysed textbooks, photographs presented the largest part of the pictorial material. The pictorial material contributed the most to improving the understanding of the content in the textbooks for the third grade
