Abstract

In this work, we tested the hypothesis that cells evolved different mechanisms to synthesize and maintain basal levels of PtdIns(4,5)P2. Activation of phospholipase Cβ mediates cellular effects of multiple neurotransmitter and hormone receptors coupled to Gαq proteins. Gαq-coupled receptors are expressed in different cell types, even in cell types cohabiting the same tissue. One of the first steps in the signaling of Gαq is to hydrolyze PtdIns(4,5)P2. Hence, termination of this signaling requires the resynthesis of PtdIns(4,5)P2.
