Abstract

Objective To analyze the cause,clinical characteristics and final visual outcome of pediatric ocular injuries in Gansu Province.Methods 328 eyes of 326 patients with pediatric ocular injuries were analyzed including sex,age,circumstance,classification,cause,visual acuity,clinical treatment and result.The pediatric ocular injuries were classified with the International Classification of Disease (the 10th edition,ICD-10).Results The proportion of pediatric ocular injuries was 28.42% in all hospitalized ocular injuries at the same time.The rate of male was higher than that of female(7.2:1).The patients aged 5 ~ 9 had the highest incidence(63.1%)and the most common circumstance was at home and in public area.The proportion of rural children was bigger than that of urban children(4.6:1).The rank order of causes of injuries were blunt injuries,sharp instruments injuries,explosion and animal-related injuries.The visual acuities were improved in all cases after treatment.The percentage of blindness was high and the proportion of enucleation of eyeball was 0.61%.Conclusion The pediatric ocular injuries are harmful to childen' s vision seriously and most of them can be prevented.Blindness rates will be reduced obviously if ocular injuries can be treated actively.
