Abstract

The method of initial functions has been used. The material is elastic and deformations are small. No a priori assumptions regarding the distribution of stresses and displacements have been made. The formulation is such, that it is possible to obtain a theory of any order and refinement. A sixth-order governing equation has been used to analyse uniformly loaded simply supported square plates for various thickness and material properties. The variation across the thickness of maximum stresses and displacements has been compared with those obtained by the application of Ambartsumyam's theory and Reissner's theory. On analysing the numerical results, it was found that the ratios of a/h≤10, and E x/E y≤10, these results compare well.
