Abstract

Modal field approach to the modeling of the electromagnetic properties of three-dimensional periodic structures containing metallic components often is plagued by convergence and instability problems. These problems arise due to the extremely large and negative values of the real part of the permittivities at the frequencies of interest. We show that the electromagnetic fields can be modeled accurately by treating the metal as perfect electric conductors. Our approach makes use of modified field representations and introduces interface transformer elements in our transmission-line treatment of the pertinent boundary conditions.
