Abstract
Asymmetric cyclotron resonances resulting from the electric field gradients and spatial distribution of ions in an ICR cell are discussed. A comparison is made between ICR line-shapes obtained using surface ionization and electron impact techniques, and qualitative agreement is found with a previously proposed theory. The influence of electric field gradients on the mass resolution of the ICR device is investigated theoretically.
