Abstract

A new approach to easily quantify glucosamine samples isolated from shrimp shells and glucosamine tablets utilizing aqueous normal phase chromatography (ANP) is described. Glucosamine was retained on a Diamond Hydride™ (DH) column using a gradient. The format developed creates a calibration curve for glucosamine using LC-MS analyses which was then run to quantify the amount of glucosamine after isolation from chitin in shrimp shells or extraction from the tablets. In addition, the compound chondroitin that is often found in the same tablet as glucosamine was also analyzed by LCMS.
