Tanjung Benoa Tourism Object is a leading tourism object in Badung Regency. The increasing number of tourists and residents has caused pressure on the water area, resulting in a decline in environmental quality. In sustainable tourism management, it is necessary to formulate an environmental management model developed based on local wisdom. The research method uses the Interpretative Structural Modeling (ISM) system approach to formulate an environmental management model for Tanjung Benoa tourism objects through interviews and focus group discussions involving community leaders and experts to formulate elements and sub-elements. The elements selected are (1) main constraints, (2) program objectives, (3) affected community sectors, (4) desired changes, and (5) the need for implementation of water pollution control programs. The results and findings of the study indicate that: (1) the main constraints in managing tourism objects in Tanjung Benoa are limited human resources and weak financial support; (2) The main targets of the program are to improve environmental quality, maintain environmental carrying capacity, reduce land conversion, change environmental behavior and awareness, and realize sustainable tourism; (3) The main influence is the government; (4) The main changes desired are environmental cleanliness, reduced environmental violations, the formation of environmental partnerships, sustainable tourism and environmental management, and increased awareness of the business world and the community; (5) The need for implementing the main program is budget availability. The recommended environmental management model is management that is implemented comprehensively and involves stakeholders in a participatory manner.

  • Rita Parmawati + 3 more

Pulau Merah Beach must have sustainable tourism management that involves many institutions in the regional area as decision-makers and controls the regional plan. This research aims to analyze the institutional sector for tourism management on Pulau Merah Beach to support sustainability. Data were obtained through interviews with the Head of BAPPEDA, the Head of the Culture and Tourism Office, Spatial Planning Practitioners, Environmental Experts, and Local Communities. Data then analyzed with Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM). There are four elements used to measure the institutional tourism management in Pulau Merah Beach, i.e. (1) elements of institutional (20 sub-elements); (2) elements of institutional problems (12 sub-elements); (3) elements of expected goals (11 sub-elements); (4) elements of the required program (11 sub-elements). The results of the analysis conducted show that DISBUDPAR is an institution with a role and authority in regulating tourism on Pulau Merah Beach, but it requires cooperation with other agencies to achieve sustainable management. The expected goals of tourism management in Pulau Merah Beach are sustainable, integrated, synergy, efficient, and sufficient, and firm law enforcement. However, there is no clear SOP between institutions. So, it can lead to a lack of integration between institutions and the emergence of unclear standards and measuring instruments. To achieve goals and resolve existing problems, designing several programs is required, such as forming a specific institution that handles the tourism management of Pulau Merah Beach, evaluating policies, and integrating tourism management's technical guidelines in the Pulau Merah Beach Area. If each key point can be optimized, it will be possible to realize sustainable tourism management on Pulau Merah Beach Banyuwangi. Keywords: DISBUDPAR, institution, interpretive structural modelling, sustainable tourism.

  • Esraa Osama Zayed + 1 more

PurposeRecently, sustainability aspects are gaining importance among supply chain management (SCM) research field, hence this study aims to explore barriers to sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) implementation in Egyptian industries and the interrelationships among these barriers to provide a structured detailed model for barriers and suggest recommendations to deal with these barriers.Design/methodology/approachThe paper is an empirical study with a descriptive research approach using qualitative methodology. Data were collected through interviewing experts involved in sustainability implementation within supply chain functions. Afterward interpretive structural modeling (ISM) for barriers was conducted to develop a structured model representing possible interrelationships between barriers.FindingsFindings have reported slight differences among barriers to SSCM implementation in Egyptian industries other than those stated previously. ISM analysis helped in shaping barriers into a detailed structured model where interrelationships among barriers can be clearly defined. Additionally, based on the data collected and the ISM model, this study managed to offer recommendations to deal with these barriers.Research limitations/implicationsFuture researches might consider developing ISM analysis for a smaller number of barriers, or focus on each of internal and external barriers individually to minimize ISM analysis complexity and enhance its accuracy. As ISM analysis technique is highly dependent on experts' opinions and experience, validation is highly recommended either by structural equation modeling (SEM) or linear structural relationship approach.Practical implicationsThis study provides insights for managers about internal and external barriers to SSCM implementation in Egyptian industries, a detailed structured model for interrelationships among these barriers and recommendations to deal with these barriers.Originality/valueThis study is one of the very first studies to implement ISM for barriers to SSCM on data collected from Egyptian industries. Consequently, it will direct further research focusing on developing strategies or recommendations to overcome these barriers.

  • Prasanth S Poduval + 2 more

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to highlight the application of Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) to analyze the barriers in implementation of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM). TPM is explained in brief with emphasis on maintenance programs to improve quality of products, reliability of processes and reduction in cost. Barriers in implementation of TPM are also discussed. Concept of ISM and steps in developing ISM are described in detail. The authors then illustrate the research methodology which involves applying ISM to analyze barriers in TPM. Design/methodology/approach – The paper starts off by describing the concepts of TPM and ISM. Barriers in implementation of TPM are discussed. It explains ISM as a methodology to understand the underlying interrelationship among the inhibiting factors. The authors draw up an action plan to carry out research on the usage of ISM to study the TPM inhibitors, to develop an integrated model to establish the relationship among the different TPM inhibiting factors and to suggest action plan to mitigate these factors. Findings – Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) can be used to analyze the driving and dependence power of the variables inhibiting implementation of TPM. The barriers to implement TPM are described with detailed explanation. The complexity of the problem and the degree of interconnection among the variables can be found out. This will help Managers take action on mitigating the barriers. Practical implications – By analyzing the interrelationships among the barriers and their strengths, management can chalk out the strategy to implement TPM in an organization. Management will become aware of the barriers which have the maximum influence and then can act accordingly to mitigate these barriers. This will help in implementing TPM faster and in an organized manner. Originality/value – Many authors have used ISM to study various issues. A couple of authors have used ISM to determine barriers in implementation of TPM. The authors feel that most of the papers describe ISM in brief making it slightly difficult for readers to understand. This paper aims to explain elaborately step-by-step on how to develop an ISM making it easier for researchers to understand the ISM concept. Even though there are papers on TPM and difficulties in implementation of TPM, this paper explains the barriers in implementing TPM based on the experience of the corresponding author having worked in the refinery industry.

  • Nov 25, 2025
  • Ege Akademik Bakis (Ege Academic Review)
  • Mustafa Tuncer Okumuş

This research examines sustainable tourism management using bibliometric analysis. This study identifies the complex dynamics of organizational psychology by clarifying essential themes that influence sustainable tourism management. As a global industry, tourism has a profound impact on the planet and its inhabitants; therefore, this powerful sector must be governed by sustainability principles. The analysis provides an overview of the current state of sustainable tourism management, including the most impactful authors, journals, universities, and countries, and tracks its historical development. Data were obtained from the widely used social science database, Web of Science (WOS), and processed using the open-source program R. The results were presented through performance analysis and scientific mapping, the core components of bibliometric analysis. This textual analysis highlighted significant topics, prolific authors, influential sources, and prevalent phrases. The paper discusses the field’s contributions and consequences, concluding with future research directions and limitations. A complete collection of pertinent literature was acquired from the Web of Science database, initially yielding 173 documents. The inclusion criteria selected only ‘articles’ from the following research areas: ‘hospitality leisure sport tourism’, ‘management’, ‘green sustainable science technology’, and ‘social science interdisciplinary’ studies. Furthermore, only documents from ‘SSCI’ and ‘ESCI’ journals, written in ‘English’, were included, resulting in a final collection of 82 documents. This investigation produced significant findings regarding sustainable tourism management and offered valuable insights for future scholarly research. Sustainable tourism management studies have increased since 2015, with the journal Sustainability publishing the most articles. The nine most prolific writers include Dredge D. and Stoeckl N. The most productive universities are James Cook University, Walailak University, and the University of Patras, with Spain being the most productive country. Sustainable tourism is the most frequently used term, and the keyword co-occurrence network shows that it forms four distinct clusters. As a result, businesses can leverage the existing literature to develop and improve their sustainable tourism management practices. Effective sustainable tourism management requires adherence to ECON-ESG (Economic, Environmental, Social, Governance) elements and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

New Challenges for Managing Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas: An Exploratory Study of the European Landscape Convention in Sweden
  • Apr 16, 2015
  • Society & Natural Resources
  • Daniel N Laven + 2 more

“Sustainable tourism” has emerged as the dominant paradigm for managing visitor use in protected areas. An important consequence of this approach is that management tends to focus on issues inside protected-area boundaries. Recently, broader landscape-oriented approaches have gained attention (e.g., the European Landscape Convention [ELC]). These strategies strive to achieve sustainable landscape protection and often identify tourism as a key development strategy. Using Sweden as an example, this article explores the intersection of the landscape concept—as articulated in the ELC—with the contemporary notion of sustainable tourism management in protected areas. This exploratory study was conducted using qualitative research methods. While study participants reported strong potential in landscape-oriented approaches, they also identified key challenges including “institutional negotiation and conflict” and “confusion and uncertainty about the landscape concept.” The article concludes by addressing the implications for enhancing sustainable tourism management through adoption of landscape-oriented approaches.

FROM COLLABORATION TO RESILIENCE: MODELING THE MEDIATING ROLE OF SUSTAINABLE TOURISM MANAGEMENT IN COMMUNITY-BASED TOURISM SYSTEMS
  • Jan 15, 2026
  • Multidisciplinary Indonesian Center Journal (MICJO)
  • Lenny Kurnia Octaviani + 3 more

This study aims to analyze the influence of multi-stakeholder collaboration on the resilience of tourism activities and to examine the mediating role of sustainable tourism management within a community-based tourism village context. A quantitative explanatory research design was employed, using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The research was conducted in Nglanggeran Tourism Village, Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, with data collection carried out in 2025. A total of 90 respondents were selected through purposive sampling based on their active involvement in village tourism activities. The three main constructs, namely multi-stakeholder collaboration, sustainable tourism management, and tourism activity resilience, were measured using a 5-point Likert scale instrument. PLS-SEM analysis was employed to evaluate the measurement and structural models, encompassing assessments of validity, reliability, R², Q², and hypothesis testing via bootstrapping. Findings indicate that multi-stakeholder collaboration has a positive and significant effect on both sustainable tourism management and tourism activity resilience. Sustainable tourism management also shows a positive and considerable influence on tourism activity resilience. Furthermore, a partial mediation effect was identified, wherein sustainable tourism management strengthens the impact of multi-stakeholder collaboration on the strength of tourism activities. Structured and inclusive multi-stakeholder collaboration, when integrated with sustainable tourism management practices, enhances the resilience of tourism activities in community-based destinations. These results underscore the crucial importance of collaborative governance and sustainable management practices in fostering destination sustainability and resilience.

Interpretive Structural Modeling to evaluate the key barriers inhibiting successful implementation of Overall Equipment Effectiveness
  • Jan 1, 2020
  • International Journal of Productivity and Quality Management
  • Sandeep Singh + 2 more

The scope of study is to cover the critical and significant barriers in implementation of overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) through interpretive structural modelling (ISM). Based on a common proverb "If we can't measure it, we can't improve it", ISM is the competent approach to measure the significance of its various variables (barriers), their hierarchy and interdependency on each other. The barriers affecting OEE implementation may vary as per industrial sectors, but the goal would remain the same, i.e., to embellish the performance. Fourteen critical barriers of OEE implementation were analysed with the directions and guidelines of industrial and academic experts. In addition, ISM model is proposed for the key barriers. ISM may be used to understand the relationship between barriers. Once the behavioural pattern of barriers is determined through ISM, it is easy to predict the issues related to equipment's maintenance and efficiency over a specific phase of time.
