Abstract

Deep learning is an effective way to cultivate students’ core competencies. As an organic part and crucial resource of deep learning in English class, the textbook presents activities at diverse cognitive levels. In this study, the cognitive levels of activities are analyzed in a senior English textbook by adopting a qualitative method, which intends to reveal the characteristics of deep learning activities. Then in the study an even distribution is revealed between surface and deep learning activities, the latter featuring integration, contextualization, and participatory nature. Finally, three suggestions are put forward to promote students’ deep learning.
