Abstract

The purpose of this review is to document the findings conducted via techniques such as EEG (ElectroEncephaloGram), fMRI (Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging or functional MRI), PET (brain Positron Emission Tomography) and behavioral studies used to study brain-processing in comprehension of non-literal language in patients with brain lesions. There have been several studies to locate the comprehension of non-literal language in patients with brain lesions with differing conclusions over the years. To suggest a way forward, the lacunae in each method is examined and a solution suggested by combining theoretical approaches and technological advances to better understand brain functioning in comprehension of non-literal language.
