Abstract

The results of palynological analyses that have been carried out in Jordan in southern semi-arid zones show the existence of distinct climatic periods, in particular on the Kebaran and Natufian horizons well dated by typology or by radio-carbon analyses. After a dry and cold period during the Kebaran, the Geometric Kebaran, between —13.000 and — 11.000 B.C., seems to have benefitted from climatic conditions that enabled vegetation to expand. During the early Natufian, dry and cold climate is to be found again between — 10.830 ± 1.000 and — 10.140 ± 800 B.C., followed by an increase in temperature and humidity. In the sequences presented here, pollen grains of cereal-type have been identified, except for the Kebaran. They are plentiful in the Upper Paleolithic and in fairly good supply in the Mousterian and Geometric Kebaran. They will noticeably decrease during the Natufian and Chalcolithic periods.
