Abstract

This research aims to describe the factors inhibiting the speaking ability of lower grade students in elementary schools. This research is a type of qualitative research with a case study type of research. The data sources for this research are class III teachers and class III students at SD Negeri 139/IV Jambi City. The results of this research are what factors hinder the speaking ability of lower grade students in elementary schools. Factors that hinder lower grade speaking abilities in elementary schools consist of 2 categories, namely, internal factors and external factors. Internal factors consist of the student's condition, both the physical and mental condition of the student, the student's passivity during the teaching and learning process, lack of self-confidence, always feeling afraid that the opinion or idea he conveys is wrong. Then there are external factors consisting of parenting patterns, parents' education and social background and teachers' methods of learning.
