Abstract

ObjectiveTo evaluate the analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic activity of leaves of Cassia uniflora Mill. MethodsPetroleum ether, ethyl acetate and methanolic extract of Cassia uniflora (100 and 200 mg/kg, body weight) was screened for analgesic (Eddy's hot plate and acetic acid induced writhing), anti-inflammatory (Carrageenan induced paw edema) and anti-arthritic (Complete Freund's adjuvant induced arthritis). In complete Freund's adjuvant arthritis model degree of inflammation was evaluated by hind paw swelling, body weight, and biochemical parameters and supported by radiological analysis. ResultsTreatment with extracts of Cassia uniflora showed significant (P<0.05) and dose dependant increase in paw licking time in Eddy's hot plate method. In writhing test, extracts significantly reduced the number of writhes. A dose dependant and significant inhibition of edema was observed in carrageenan induced paw edema. Petroleum ether extract at a dose of 100 mg/kg body weight showed most potent and significant activity which was supported by the results of body weight, biochemical parameters and radiological analysis in complete Freund's adjuvant arthritis model. ConclusionsThe extract possesses analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic activity which may be mediated through the phytochemical constituents of the plant.
