Abstract

The present study was designed to examine the effects of single- and double-letter solution words on anagram solution times. One group of 20 anagrams was composed of five single letters (e.g., CIDER, TREND), while a second group of 20 anagrams was composed of three single letters and one double letter (e.g., LAPEL, FOGGY). Double-letter anagrams were solved significantly faster than single-letter anagrams for high-frequency solution words, but no difference was found with low-frequency solution words. The results were related to a S-R mediational model of anagram-problem-solving behavior.
