Abstract

A diffractometer device employing parallel-beam optics was designed as an attachment for a standard x-ray generator to measure stresses in austenitic stainless steels. This device was automated using a microprocessor to control the position of the detector and to record x-ray intensity counts at the specified 2θ Bragg angles. With this set-up the experimental stress constant for austenitic stainless steel type 304L was estimated in the selected crystallographic direction (220 planes) using Cr Kα radiation. Stress measurements were also made to determine the distribution of residual stresses on the surface of a turned specimen of stainless steel 304L. Repeated measurements made with this device gave a precision of 22.66 MN m −2. The apparatus and the experimental details are described here.
