Abstract

We are not likely to see another decade of growth in science such as witnessed in the recent past. Both the results and impressions of that remarkable 1958-67 decade will be felt by the public quite far into the future. Unfortunately, there is serious likelihood that the feeling will not be all good. In fact, science and technology may be in for poor times at the hands of public opinion. Incidents with such antitechnology echoes as the Utah sheep kill and the Rhine River fish kill draw blame to science and technology for more than their fair share of the problems of a world frantically seeking simplistic solutions or scapegoats. But sheep and fish rank below the human in matters of public concern.
