Abstract

Gas pressure welding for jointing of reinforcing steel bars is most commonly used in Japan and the Far Eastern regions, where there are frequent earthquakes. An ultrasonic testing method has been developed for gas pressure welded joints. An intrinsic feature of the ultrasonic testing method is that there is a correlation between the ultrasonic testing results and the mechanical property (tensile strength) of joints. This feature enables non-destructive detection of gas pressure welded joints with tensile strength below a reference value. The theoretical justification for the correlation between the ultrasonic testing results and the tensile strength of the joints is discussed.
