Abstract

This paper reports a shared aperture antenna operating in the S and X bands. The antenna comprises two patches with U-slots for the X-band antenna, and an S-band magneto-electric (ME) dipole. The X-band element is placed on the horizontal plate of the S-band element. On simulation, the −10 dB reflection coefficient bandwidth offered by the S-band element is 17.15 % (2.72-3.23 GHz), and that of the X-band element is 20% (8-9.78 GHz). The measured reflection coefficient bandwidth in the S-band ranges from 3.12-3.22GHz, and that of the X band in the two ports are 8.23-11.04 GHz and 8.34-10.44 GHz, respectively. The mutual coupling between the two X-band elements is less than −20 dB, and that between the S and X-band elements is less than −18 dB. The simulated gain of the S and X band elements are 4.39 dB at 2.7 GHz and 8.4 dB at 9.5 GHz, respectively.
