Abstract

An overview of experimental observations of turbulent dispersion and turbulence modulation has been presented in this paper. The parameters affecting turbulent dispersion of the dispersed phase elements are described. The importance of Stokes number on the instantaneous concentration is delineated; in particular, preferential concentration is observed for certain Stokes numbers. The presence of the dispersed phase can augment or attenuate the turbulence of the continuous phase. The Kolmogorov Stokes number plays a significant role in the attenuation of turbulence. More controlled experiments are needed to isolate the effects of the dispersed phase on the turbulence energy spectrum of the continuous phase.
