Abstract

Millimeter wave (mmWave) is considered as a key technology of the next-generation wireless communications. Besides, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has been proposed as a new and low-cost solution to maximize the spectrum efficiency of wireless system. In this paper, we study an IRS-aided mmWave massive MIMO system, where each reflecting element at the IRS has only a finite number of discrete phase shifter. To maximize the spectrum efficiency of the IRS-aided mmWave system, a genetic algorithm (GA) based search scheme is proposed to obtain a near-optimal phase shifter of the IRS. Moreover, an alternating optimization algorithm is used for the integrated design of active hybrid beamforming and passive intelligent reflecting surface. The numerical results are provided to validate the good performance of the proposed algorithm.
