Abstract

As the cells of society, the family is the most basic organization of society; therefore, whether the family is happy or not is not only a family problem but also directly affects the society. Whether a family is happy or unhappy is determined by the marital foundation. Different social systems have different marital foundations. On May 1, 1950, China promulgated "The Marriage Law of the People's Republic of China" as the basic standards for marriage and family relationships in a socialist state. Last September [1980] a revision of it was made on the basis of thirty years of practical experience and of new situations and new problems. According to the spirit of the Marriage Law, we made a preliminary investigation of the circumstances of marriages and divorces in the three-and-half year period, from 1977 through the first half of 1980.
