Abstract

The tribological behaviour of a novel high-nitrogen Cr Mn austenitic stainless steel (referred to as CrMnN-steel) has been investigated using dry abrasion, abrasion-corrosion, and cavitation erosion test techniques. The performance of CrMnN-steel has been compared to AISI 304 stainless steel and Hadfield manganese steel. Hadfield steel demonstrates the highest abrasion resistance, but CrMnN-steel is far superior when a corrosive environment is introduced. The cavitation erosiion resistance of CrMnN-steel in distilled water is greater than both AISI 304 and Hadfield steel.
