Abstract

The reactions between [Rh 2(COMe) 2(CO) 2I 6] 2− and tertiary phosphines, and PPh(OMe) 2, have been studied by 13C and 31P NMR spectroscopy. The stereochemistry of the products was determined using 13C enrichment. Reaction intermediates containing both one and two phosphorus ligands were identified. When Ph 2P(CH 2) n PPh 2 ( n=1, 2) is used, carbon monoxide is lost to yield the five-coordinate compound, [Rh(COMe)I 2{Ph 2P(CH 2P(CH 2) n PPh 2}]; the X-ray structure was determined when n=1. The reaction of these five-coordinate compounds with other ligands was also investigated.
