Abstract
We have investigated the effect of surfactant structure on aqueous micellar solutions formed by two monomeric series of sodium alkylbenzensulfonates ( xφC12 and xφC16, where x = 3, 4, 5 ⋯ and indicates the position of the benzene ring [φ] along the alkyl chain) by fluorescence polarization and excimer emission spectroscopy. Our attention was focused on clear aqueous dispersions. Microviscosity around the benzene ring was shown to depend strongly on the isomer composition and is mainly determined by the short alkyl chain (SAC) of the double-tailed surfactants. The size of the aggregate seems largely to be determined by the long alkyl chain (LAC). Excimer emission and fluorescence polarization showed that the benzene ring, in all cases, resists both translational and rotational diffusion in a similar manner.
