Abstract
Summary Asthma occurs very commonly amongst the Tristan da Cunha islanders. Although allergic causes were found in most asthmatics, other allergic diseases were uncommon. The high incidence of asthma is likely to be due to genetic factors in a highly inbred community, the hereditary factor being one of heightened reactivity of the bronchi rather than a generally high degree of allergic hypersensitivity.
