Abstract
This paper describes a series of experimental tests which were carried out to investigate the forces acting on a winch drum during multi-layer rope winding. Consideration is given mainly to flange forces which are one of the prime causes of winch drum failure. A new method of measuring flange forces is demonstrated and comparisons are made of test results for different rope constructions, rope tensions and spooling. To aid winch designers and operators, flange design curves are suggested which may be used to predict the failure limits of winch drums.
