Abstract

In the present study, the categorization of tourism patterns shows how tourist attractions that are widely represented on social media by tourists 2.0 can be used as indicators of tourism trends, and of their negative effects on sustainability in Mexico. Samples of Image Hits of tourist attractions at each location of the Pueblos Mágicos (Magical Towns) program were analysed. Each trend identified was assigned to a tourism type, and was associated with a problem that affects the development of sustainable tourism in Mexico. As a conclusion, the implications of using a classification method based on tourist attractions are discussed. We also discuss the current state of sustainable tourism in Mexico, the problems that prevent it from succeeding, and possible lines of investigation with the use of Information and Communication Technologies for the tourism 2.0 sector.
