Abstract

The Separation Principle given by Shannon in his classical papers, in the year 1948, has served an important role in the design of digital communication systems for almost past 50 years. Separation Principle, however, does not provide optimum system design for many emerging applications. These are delay sensitive applications like video telephones, video conferencing, data communication systems where different bits have unequal importance and mobile communications systems that mostly have time varying channels. In such cases joint source and channel coding can provide better solutions. Some approaches for the joint source and channel coding are also discussed.
