Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper describes the techniques used in an interactive fan characteristic curve generator which is an integral part of the Underground Environment Analysis and Management System (VentSIM) developed at Imperial College. The behaviour of fans in the ventilation network analysis was reviewed and a new approach to the representation of fan characteristic curves was introduced. The new technique, used in the system in order to avoid the problems caused by curve fitting techniques, represents the fan characteristic curves in a linearized manner rather than using an orthogonal polynomial curve fitting method. The fan characteristic is represented as definite discretized lines together with two lines in the high and low pressure zones. Using this technique, possible errors that may occur during network iterations are eliminated. The integrated interactive fan characteristic curve generator is fully mouse driven and is able to handle 30 fans.
