Abstract

The teaching of computing involves many basic subjects, which are the basis for an effective learning. The teaching of memory hierarchy and, particularly, virtual memory is a great challenge, because both consider different structures, functionalities and performance. Open Educational Resources (OER) have been successfully applied to help the teaching and learning of challenging subjects. This paper addresses a novel approach for the teaching of virtual memory with OER Amnesia, which simulates the main elements of a memory hierarchy. It also describes class plans and their application in classes with Amnesia. Our best results show improvements of up to 180% in scores of students when they use Amnesia to learn virtual memory.
