Abstract

The characteristics of magnetron-type gas discharge as an intense ion source were investigated. The ion source was applied to the electromagnetic mass separator ( r = 75 cm, φ = 60°, V i = 30 kV. The intensity of the anode current was measured as a function of the parameters I f, V a, H z , p. The optimal conditions for obtaining intense ion beams were investigated especially in the region of the anode current cut-off. Taking the advantage of the ion source geometry, a new method for obtaining intense ion beams of high temperature materials was developed. By this method the ion beams of Ti, Fe, Ni, Mo, La, Ce, Nd, W, Ir, were produced. The charge materials used were in elementary or oxide form.
