Abstract

We illustrate different ways to access the abdominal cavity for laparoscopic surgery and complications that can result from that process. Furthermore, we present a novel FDA approved device named LapCap that uses suction to lift the abdominal wall and create a dome where the Veress needle can penetrate and create pneumoperitoneum at safe distance from retroperitoneal vascular structures. We demonstrate the technique in detail and report results from a clinical study. We think that the use of this device should avoid vascular injury from Veress needle insertion, increase the rate of success at first attempt and accelerate the process of abdominal entry.
