Abstract

Summary We studied the possibility of inducing amino acid transport in photoautotrophic suspension cells of Chenopodium rubrum . Under nitrogen-starvation a transport system for lysine could be induced: Transport activity by microsomal vesicles increased 5-fold, i.e. from 60 pkat. mg protein -1 to 300 pkat mg protein -1 . The induced transport activity, measured as net uptake of tritiated amino acids, was correlated with the appearance of a 52.6 kDa integral membrane polypeptide in the microsomal membranes. The induction had a very short lag phase (
