Abstract
The vibrational properties of several end-capped oligothiophenes ECnT - oligothiophenes with cycloalkane ‘caps’ which block the α- and β-positions of the terminal thiophene rings - were studied by FTIR spectroscopy. With increasing chain length the vibrational properties of the ECnT display an increased similarity to the vibrational spectrum of polythiophene. The comparison of the IR-spectra of the end-capped oligothiophenes with the spectrum of polythiophene reveals similar vibrational bands. In this respect several bands of the ECnT were assigned. The main advantage of this new class of oligothiophenes is that polymerization at the very reactive α-positions of the terminal thiophene units is prevented in the oxidized form. The chemical oxidation of an EC4T film with iodine vapor was studied in situ by ATR-FTIR-spectroscopy. The bands evolving were compared with the bands recorded during the oxidation of a polythiophene film.
