Abstract

Some specific problems with the determination of J IC are discussed, especially those which are related to the theoretical blunting line which seems to be wrong for many materials. The basic relationships of the blunting process are investigated theoretically and experimentally, using the method of stereophotogrammetry with the scanning electron microscope. A physically reasonable blunting line is proposed. The real point of initiation of stable crack growth is determined and compared with the results of the J IC -single- and J IC -multi-specimen tests. Some proposals are made to derive a testing procedure which would be more appropriate to determine J at the initiation of crack growth.
