Abstract
The aim of the study was to gain insight into the experiences and perspectives of male substance abusers who participated in a community program, with a particular focus on the role that their families played in their desistance journey from substance abuse. A qualitative research approach was adopted since the study's aim was exploratory. Thirty male participants were recruited through purposive sampling. Through interviews, participants were requested to express their emotions or experiences related to the following: being released from prison, abstaining from substance abuse, and their perceived level of assistance from their families. The findings of this study highlighted the positive influence of family support on the recovery of substance abusers. The findings showed that individuals with substance use disorder were more likely to rely on their family for assistance in contrast to other aspects (i.e., CBT counseling). The findings’ significance is considered in terms of desistance and social relations.
