Abstract
BackgroundThe aim of this study was to explore the knowledge and attitudes of neonatal staff towards neonatal organ donation at a single tertiary level neonatal unit in London, England. Despite guidelines supporting its implementation, neonatal donation remains rare in the UK. Limited research exists exploring the knowledge and attitudes of neonatal staff towards donation. MethodsA service evaluation survey was created to collect data on the knowledge and attitudes of neonatal staff towards neonatal donation. Results76% of staff surveyed support the introduction of neonatal donation into clinical practice. However, knowledge of the processes and procedures involved were limited. ConclusionNeonatal staff require education and support to facilitate the introduction of neonatal donation into clinical practice. Neonatal unit staff should work collaboratively with specialist organ donation services within each NHS trust, to ensure that all suitable babies are being referred as appropriate.
