Abstract

This paper details the expert system SUPEREX used to select the super-structure type of bridges based on experience and knowledge of the domain experts. This system is made up of a working memory, knowledge base, and a database. The working memory is initialized after the declarations and rules have been loaded. The knowledge base comprises of the knowledge unit for the generation of the candidates and the knowledge unit for the evaluation of the generated candidates. The database is used during the evaluation of each candidate and it was stored in the 16 separate data files. In this study SUPEREX is implemented with the expert system tool which uses the production system for knowledge representation and provides the mechanism of forward chaining.
