Abstract
Research knowledge is available which can be used to solve reproductive problems in dairy cattle, but this knowledge requires the assistance of a human expert to apply it to individual situations. Human experts are expensive and in short supply. As an experiment in providing computer assistance for human experts, an expert diagnostic aid (EXPERT/R) was developed. The system has four main components: (1) a set of 36 questions which can be asked of the user to solicit information necessary for the diagnosis; (2) a set of 222 subreports which can be assembled into diagnostic reports; (3) a set of rules which use the question responses to choose which subreports will be included in the diagnostic report; and (4) a computer program composed of text files which contain the subreports and a BASIC program containing the questions and rules of inference. EXPERT/R is delivered on a microcomputer, with a typical diagnostic session requiring about 15 min. A report varying in length from one-half to one-and-one-half pages is produced. Initial evaluations have shown the program to be accurate and well-accepted by county agents.
