Abstract

In this paper, the friction in cold rolling is determined by different techniques. In the first method, Laser Doppler Velocimetry is used to measure separately the roll speed and strip exit speed, which in turn are used to determine the forward slip and subsequently friction coefficient. In the second method, friction coefficient is determined by a sensor roll which is embedded with pressure pins, and in the third method friction is derived from the forward slip calculated from the markings left on the strip. The three friction coefficients obtained from different techniques are used to calculate the rolling force and torque, which are then compared with those obtained from the experiments.
