Abstract
Transient experiments with polymer melts were carried out using the flow birefringence technique. In the transient experiment, motion pictures were taken of isochromatic fringe patterns of polymer melts when a step change in melt flow was introduced. It has been demonstrated that the flow birefringence technique can provide information on the transient behavior of viscoelastic polymer melts in the entire flow field.
