Abstract
A brief survey shows the indirect character of the evidence of life in the Archean. In the same category may be placed the evidence for algal life in the Archean iron-bearing formation of Minnesota, because definite data are lacking and filamentous algal forms are not generally preserved even in algal reefs. Organic-like structures, simulating algae, fungi, and worm-burrows, of inorganic osmotic origin, open up possibilities of misinterpretation of filamentous fossil forms.
