Abstract

NoTE: The substance of this paper, the main purpose of which was to attempt to place the evolution of the twelve-tone system in some sort of historical perspective, has been embodied, together with that of the same author's Some Theoretical Aspects of 'Composition with Rows' (read before the Western New York Chapter, May 25th, 1935), in a revised and extended form in the article entitled Sch6nberg's Tone-Rows and the Tonal System of the Future in The Musical Quarterly for January, i935, XXII, I, pp. I4-37.
